What does "Ethical Fashion" even mean?
Let's start by understanding what "unethical fashion" is. As of 2016, about 98% of the clothes purchased in the USA are manufactured overseas. The vast majority of these items are produced in factories that underpay, use child labor, abuse and threaten workers, participate in varying types of trafficking, and force employees to work in dangerous conditions. These factories produce the cheapest results, which they sell to major companies who mark up the prices and sell them for far more than they're worth.
Phew. That's a lot of info.
So, ethical fashion is the opposite of that. Ethical fashion is created by companies who pay all of their employees a fair wage (whether that be in the US or internationally) and source their materials sustainably. That's the short answer!
How do I shop ethically?
There are multiple ways to shop ethically!
First, shop less. Ask yourself if you really need what you're considering, and if you do, wear it until it's truly worn out.
Second, shop secondhand. There are already more than enough clothes on the planet for everyone. Try thrift stores or online consignment for affordable options.
Third, shop at ethical companies who are responsibly creating the styles you love.
How do I get featured on Selflessly Styled?
Simply contact me and let me know if you'd like to be interviewed on the blog. Depending on your location and schedule, we'll work out whether we do the interview in person, over the phone or via email. I want to make it as easy as possible for you!
Do you blog for a living?
Selflessly Styled is a side project of mine. I devote a lot of time to it, but it is not my income source. I occasionally receive payment from a company that I promote, but I am very particular about only working with companies who have the highest ethical standards and products that I truly love. There are some affiliate links on the website, which means I receive a small commission when you purchase through my link. It really helps me out if you use my links when making purchases!
Who takes the Photos for Selflessly Styled?
Most of the banner images were taken by my talented friend Maddi Allen. You can see more of her work here. If you live near Portland, I can't recommend her enough!
Images for specific brands are from their website and link back to the source.
