Isobel Schofield: Founder of Bryr
Isobel is an absolute boss. She's creates the most beautiful clogs you've ever seen over at Bryr. I've admired her work for years, and I truly admire her as a person as well. The care she puts into her product is an expression of her thoughtfulness towards others. I'm so honored to share her interview with you today. If you haven't already fallen in love with Bryr, you will now!
Share a little of your personal background
I grew up in England, and moved to the States when I was a teenager. We lived out in California for a year when I was growing up, and it was always a goal for me to move back when I was an adult.
What was your inspiration for Bryr?
I find the intersection between nature and city in San Francisco very inspiring. My works comes out of working with the materials hands on.
Has the brand evolved much since you started it?
I think aesthetically, we have stayed true to the brand's vision from the very beginning. I am interested in modern, organic design, with a focus on materials and lasting craftsmanship over fashion and trends.
Can you identify any major obstacles you've had to overcome in the endeavor? How did you get past them?
When I first started BRYR, I spent about year and a half trying to find a manufacturer in the US. After I came up empty handed, I decided to go back to basics and learn how to make them and source the materials myself. At the time, it seemed like a crazy endeavor, but now I love having the absolute freedom and total control of making my own products by hand.
In your opinion, what makes Bryr unique?
When I started my company, I was searching for a name, and I came across this word, BRYR, that means "to care" in Swedish. It may seem Pollyannaish, but we really do bring a lot of love and care to the products we make. Every pair is individually made, to order, for each customer. My team and I really love what we do, and I think you can feel that in the end product.
In an ideal world, where would you like to see the brand in 5 years?
My goal is to keep making the best products we can, personally continue to grow creatively and professionally, and contribute something worthwhile into the world. I'm following my life's dream and for that I feel extremely grateful. I'm not sure what that will look like in 5 year, but I'm excited to see what it is.
